You are a prisoner to the Internet

in Internet

Yes, the Internet is great and so is social media but how great is it for you?

Seriously, what benefit has the Internet given to you? How about social media?

  • Did you make more money from it?
  • Make new friends which result in more happiness or business

OR

  • You waste more time cyberstalking others on Facebook
  • You have more virtual friends than real ones
  • You don’t go out as much or enjoy the outdoors

Honestly, ask yourself what benefit the Internet has given you? Can it be measured, if so how much?

And how much time did you spend getting that?

Could you have done something else better to get more result?

What am I doing about it?

  • Not using twitter anymore
  • Took up biking everyday now
  • Minimize my use of online dating
  • Made friends that enjoy outdoor activities

Final thoughts

Who cares about the latest IPhone apps

Who cares about being logged into msn and facebook through your mobile

And really, will we be doing everything with our cell phones now?

Got anything to add, feel free

Actually, I really appreciate the internet. It has indeed allowed me to make money — not a “living wage”, but we’re talking hundreds, maybe thousands, extra over a few years that I’ve put toward debt, and with relatively little work.

Also, I have met some great people. Some are now “real life” friends, though I don’t see much use in the distinction as most of my communication with “real life” friends is also online. And I don’t mind that. It’s convenient and I like talking to them all.

I’ve learned a lot online, too, whether through online classes or reading blogs. I actually have MORE appreciation for the outdoors because I’ve been able to teach myself about the local flora and fauna here. It makes neighborhood walks feel more like scavenger hunts. Very fun!

Also, I’ve learned SOOOO much about saving money, spending wisely, etc. Just reading internet reviews and buying some things online have saved me a lot of money and trouble!

And of course, the internet has been an infinite source of entertainment for relatively low cost! Not only do I read tons every day, but my husband and I were able to ditch cable easily after getting hooked on Hulu and other online video. And I do enjoy reading stuff online from my phone when I’m traveling or stuck waiting somewhere.

But yes… you can spend too much time playing around online when you should be doing something productive offline. I don’t think that’s the fault of the internet. People have “wasted time” from the beginning of recorded time and then some. Recreation is good, but it’s easy to slip into just being lazy. So, if the internet is making it too easy to be lazy, then by all means, step back some from it!

Meg, thanks for your comment.
And thanks again for reminding us all the great benefits the Internet has provided for you and I am sure others have similar experience.

But yes some of us just waste too much time on it and don’t get any real results.
I remember a few months back when I was on Twitter for a few hours each day and although I did interact with a few people, I was practically glued to the screen during that time. In the end it did not give me much in return.

You use online dating?? LOL Could you please blog about your experiences? One post per Girl you dated please…. Oh gosh. Too funny. You have to share your thoughts and what you were thinking, like “I thought she looked so much scarier than her picture”

Actually I’ve had good experience with online dating, no horror stories.
How unfortunate eh?

I do love the internet myself and honestly I feel like I am addicted to it at times. Being self-employed with focus on web based businesses, the internet has allowed me to be able to do my work at mu own pace. I could not imagine living without the internet anymore. The internet can be a distraction at times, so FOCUS, FOCUS, FOCUS.

Bernz, thanks for your comment.
Yes you make a great point. Business and self employment can truly make a big difference for us if used the right way.

But I imagine it is a distraction and waste of time for most.
