My biggest fear about our existence…part 1

in life

Ever since taking philosophy in high school and leaning more into that topic ever since, it got me thinking about life differently.

I no longer believe what my religion says about life in terms of living on earth and then going to heaven. I just can’t wrap my mind around the idea that the living earth and “heaven” are two separate worlds.

In fact, I get scared sometimes when I have my quiet times at home and start to think about of where will we go once we die. Also, why do we die, isn’t there like a way to replace our organs to keep going for more years such as replacing a car engine.

I mean, when we die, does our body just decay and our spirits rise and join a different world or galaxy and begin a new life? What if there are multiple galaxies out there that we must go through as stages.

What if earth is just a test pilot to see just how well we can survive to see if we are worthy to join a different world of higher being?

The main thing that I can’t wrap my mind around, is does this world completely end when humans begin dying off?

I don’t claim to know what happens after we die — or if there is anything after we die. But here are some things to think about:

* Where were you before you were born? Did you exist? If not, was that really so bad? After all, if you don’t exist, then what is there to worry about?
* Are you the same person you were as a kid? A year ago? A minute ago? If who we are constantly changes, then isn’t death just one more change?
* Where do “you” go when you are unconscious at night? Do you fear sleep?
* What happens to other things when they are used up, disassembled, or decay? * All the matter in them and in us has been here since the beginning of time (as far as we know), constantly being reborn into new forms — even us as we live and discard pieces of ourselves as dust or other waste. And even what we consider “our” bodies is a collection of cells, 90% of which are bacteria! Where does “I” begin and end?
* If truly there is no “I”, is death really so big a change?

Sometimes I think of it like a roller-coaster you fall off, that you can’t get back on. Since you can’t test it, the way I look at it is make the most of what you’ve got, right here, right now. As one of mentors reminds me, live for today, but plan to live 100 years.

Meg, thanks for your comment.
Those are great questions to think about, perhaps I may draw some opinions for a future post.

J.D., thanks for your comment.
That is a great mindset, live for today but plan to live 100 years.

Great questions… some we will maybe never know the answers to, but there are benefits to assuming certain things – think Pascal’s wager but more in terms of general ethics and goodwill towards others. Make the most of what you’ve got, and do plan to live long, for sure…. if you enjoy life who wouldn’t want to keep living? I was thinking earlier today too that at some point one might “know” if/when one has lived a full life… you’ll feel like you’ve done all that you wanted to and achieved who you are and your life’s work.

MoneyEnergy, thanks for your comment.
I guess dwelling on the uncertain and trying to answer it will only waste more time for me when instead I could be enjoying it doing something I like.
